Its a scam , telling you to press 8 to hang up or 9 to hear more info. I
also got calls at home with 214 area code. After you press 7 or 9, you would
hear a ringing, and strangers answering thier phones, as if you were making
the phones calls.

Press "8" or "9" Travel Pitch - Calls Originating from Area Code 305 and
214.
March 30, 2005 -- The Bell Canada Corporate Security department is aware of
and has investigated these telemarketing calls. While they may be an
annoyance to some called parties, they do not appear to involve fraud or
violate Canadian telemarketing restrictions.
The calls, which originate from U.S. destinations, appear to use an outbound
interactive voice response (IVR) system, which randomly dials to several
area codes, using automatic diallers. The IVR directs interested callers to
an operator or recorded information source depending on which numbers they
press on their touch-tone handsets. When a called party dials "9," as
instructed by the recorded announcement, the called party is provided the
opportunity to speak with a live voice telemarketer (to win a "free trip");
dialling 8 directs the called party to an application to have themselves
removed from the calling list.
Contrary to various rumours currently in circulation, if a residential
subscriber presses "9", it will not provide the caller with access to the
subscriber's telephone line such that the caller may place long distance
calls on that subscriber's account.
Bell Canada has not received any confirmation of any fraudulent activity
directed at any of our customers through these calls.
The telemarketer in question usually initiates these calls from area code
305 (often from 1-305-675-6263), which covers southeast Florida, including
Miami. It appears that the same company is also placing calls from area
code 214 (often 214-279-0990), which covers mid and northeast Texas,
including parts of Dallas. Bell Canada has been in touch with the US
carriers serving these numbers, and has been assured that these are genuine
telemarketing business calls.
The best way to deal with this annoyance is to educate employees not to
respond to incoming calls from Area Code 305, 214 unless they are familiar
with the number. Users should terminate the call as soon as they hear the
recorded announcement.
Bell Canada is continuing to monitor the situation.

I just got a call from 616-980-2257 a few minutes ago. This is the
second such call I have received.
On the first call a few weeks ago, I pressed 9 and said very colourful
things to the phone rep for calling my cell with telemarketing..
This time I just pressed 8. :/

I pushed 9, put it on speakerphone, recorded the conversation
and asked for contact information - they are required by law
to provide this information.
They refused and then hung up.
I then sent a letter complaining to the CRTC with all relevant info.
If everyone complains, something will be done.

I too just received a solicited call from this 214-279-0900. I called it back and a fax machine picked up.
The lady is a total B*@#$h! I told her she was in violation of a federal regulation that bans companies from soliciting cell phones. She disputed the fact that a "friend" of mines put my cell # down and they were in fact NOT in any violations. I denied that ANY of my friends would do such a thing without telling me and that I would NOT approve any way. She went on to say terrible things about how her company was not breaking the law.
After that unpleasantry, I called my carrier, Verizon, to report such acts and of course they could only suggest that I sign my number up on the
www.donotcall.gov list.
After reading the article about past incidents, I went to the link (http://www.phonebusters.com/english/legal_2005_mar30.html) I called the number under contacts of this site and left a message to see what information I could gather. Hopefully they will call me back.
As you already notices, yes, I am that mad. I am a pleasant person and do not for one secone appreaciate unpleasant people. I was civil and simply requested that I not be called anymore. But,Overall, Im glad to have found this forum to let off some steam as well as pass on some awareness.
I hope anyone who knows more about this situation will please reply to my banter. Thank you.
